Eating Jager-schnitzel

Yesterday my cousin, Tom, and his wife, Mary, came over from the Seattle area to spend the weekend with us. They were able to get a room at the same hotel where we are staying. And after a short, light picnic in Riverfront Park, we headed into Leavenworth.

Leavenworth is a tourist town, a Bavarian themed village that survives on tourism. One of the things they do is have festivals. They mirror all the festivals in Germany. This weekend was Oktoberfest, and town was crowded with young people who had obviously been drinking a bit of the imported German beer. Tom wanted a beer and Mary wanted Jager-schnitzel. Well all four of us wanted it.

Wayne worked at Die Musik Box for a long time, and the owners also own one of the best German Restaurants and beer gardens in town. Wayne used to eat lunch there every day because at worst he had to pay the discounted employee price for lunch, and frequently, they bought him lunch. Even though he doesn't work there any more, they still really like him as late as week before last, they bought him lunch!

So we sent Wayne in to see if he would be able to get us in more quickly. Also, another of my cousin's, Tom's sister, Sandy and her husband, Del, were going to meet us in Leavenworth. So we needed a table for six. The hallway going in was full, but Wayne got us that table, with no waiting, and as good a server as I have ever seen.

We all ordered Jager-schnitzel, which is a pork cutlet pan fried with Jager sauce. Jager sauce is made from bacon, beef stock, red wine, mushrooms, and onions. And it is really yummy. It comes with sweet and source spiced red cabbage--so good it's almost like eating dessert--and spatzle, little pasta type dumplings that are simmered in water and then sauteed. It's wonderful! And we don't eat it very often for obvious reasons! Tom and Mary drank beer, I had a coffee drink with chocolate wine, and Wayne stuck with black tea--good for cancer patients.

We had a great time visiting and then later walking around the downtown area of Leavenworth, watching all the inebriated individuals trying to walk around. We had a blast, and other than the fact that he had a walker with him, Wayne looked like himself. It was great to take a night out and not worry about his cancer, but just go and have a good time. And Tom made Wayne some chocolate chip cookies. We need more days like yesterday!

Tonight we are having dinner with some friends we haven't seen in a long time, so that should be fun. Wayne slept most of this afternoon, so he should be good to go for a couple hours tonight. Getting out and doing things is a lot of fun when he is able, but it does wear him out. Still, we are trying to get together with all our friends before we leave so we can say good-bye.

The plan at this time, I believe, is that Fern and someone else will come on Friday night and we will load up and go on Saturday. However, Fern is working on the logistics of this move and we can probably go any time after his chemo. He may have a couple of bad days if the tegretal interacts with the chemo again, but at least I know what we should do, and we'll be at Fern's and she will know what to do.

Anyway, Montana here we come!

  1. So glad to hear that you are out and about having a good time. Remember the nurse in the chemo room said that the week before the next chemo would be when you will probbly feel the strongest, so I hope that is true and you have a bit more energy than normal. The sun is out and is suppose to be another fairly good week, so enjoy it. Yeh, I am so glad that the move to Montana is getting closer.

  2. I'd forgotten that the chemo nurse said the last week before chemo is the best. It certainly has proven out with Wayne. Obviously, he isn't going to be running marathons, but he is feeling better! We went to Leavenworth again today and he did really well. He was pretty tired last night though.

  5. Hi, Wayne and Barb,
Jager-schnitzel in Leavenworth!! I can just smell that downtown smell of German food....
Well, the time grows near...you be sure to send us a new address. We have a bunch of National Geographic magazines saved up for you.
Wayne's gonna be a wet noodle, moving to Montana right after chemo. Eat all you can before Friday, Wayne, just to store up some energy.
We hope the next few days go well for you two. I think it is absolutely GRAND that Wayne's family is coming over to help with the move.
    Stay in touch,
    We love you,
    John and Denise
    P.S. 33 degrees last night...

  7. We are moving Saturday. Hooray! After talking over a number of options, we decided the most economical way would be to have Fern and Bob come with their pickup and we will only take what will fit into that and into our car for now. We have a Rav 4 so it doesn't hold much, but I think that we can get in everything that we need for now. We can hardly wait to be out of here. This is not the best environment! Wayne will be able to rest from Friday till Saturday and then at least he doesn't have to help move boxes--although he has the kind of walker that also works as a chair, so maybe we should put boxes on the seat of his walker and have him move them out that way!! Tee hee! The view from Fern's is so gorgeous. We are both just itching to get there. And John, this must be the warmest fall on record. Still not even close to freezing!

  8. We are so excited for you. Arlen & I are going to try to make it to Montana over Christmas break. When you deceide to move the heavy stuff be sure to let us know as we will be there to help of course. We will even try to grab Steven, Paul and the girls to help if they are not working. Unfortunately, we have a funeral to go to this week-end. Sharney's best friend in the world lost her four year battle with breast cancer. Her name was Selena, only 33 years old and we all loved her very much. Please keep her in your prayers. This is what really sucks about cancer, it doesn't care who it affects. That's why it is so important that we all hang in there together to help Wayne fight this horrible disease. We love you Wayne and Barb and think and pray for you each day.

  9. Give Sharney our love and prayers. I know how hard it must be to lose a friend to cancer. I though I was going to lose mine a few years ago. I got lucky that time. 33 is so young, too young to die. My heart goes out to her friends and family.
